Partner visa and parent visa in Australia
Under the partner visa and parent visa migration schemes, there are a number of options for fiancés, partners, children, parents and other family members of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens.
They can be split in the two main categories: The Partner Visa and the Parent Visa.
Partner visa
People who have partners that are Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents can apply for a visa under this category provided they are:
- couples intending to get married (fiancés); or
- married (de jure) partners; or
- de-facto partners (including those in a same-sex relationship).
The two different partner visa pathways include:
Spouse / De Facto partner visa
This is a visa for husbands and wives as well as for committed long-term partners who aren't legally married (including those in same-sex relationships)
Prospective Marriage (fiancé) visa
This is a visa for a fiancé valid for 9 months, during which time the marriage must occur. Afterwards the applicant can apply for a spouse visa from within Australia.
